Coach Lead Collective - Time In Impactful Places

Hi Reader

Welcome to the November edition of the Coach Lead Collective, your go-to resource for coaching leaders like you, dedicated to supporting and developing our coaching community.

This month is about how to prioritise our time as we plan for 2025, an impactful Coach Developer networking strategy by Netball NZ, plus I've included the 2025 calendar template again, which may highlight a couple of scheduling challenges for next year, And remember to share with colleagues if you've got any benefit out of this. Thanks to those that have.

Impact vs. Ease of Implementation:

As the year comes to a close, you're likely already thinking ahead to 2025 —brainstorming new ideas and initiatives, plus refining what worked this year. As more great ideas are generated, just be wary of putting too many tasks your plate, or else you'll head into 2025 and it will feel like you're juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle. That’s where the Impact vs. Ease of Implementation framework becomes invaluable.

I’ve used this approach before, most notably during my time with BOP Rugby’s community team. On a big planning day in 2019, we filled large sheets around the room—each representing different areas like refereeing, coaching, secondary school rugby, junior rugby, senior rugby, women’s rugby, Maori rugby etc… We plotted our KPIs and job descriptions on the template to help us streamline our time and focus. It was a real eye-opener!

The end outcome was simple: focus on tasks that are easy to implement and have high impact. It wasn’t always simple to understand the impact (which led to another project), but we all knew the effort it took to get initiatives going. This approach was a grapple to start with, but definitely helped us streamline our strategic and operational plans for the following year (until covid came along of course).

Coach Developer Tipu: A Collaboration

During my time as Coach Development Manager at Netball New Zealand, I was fortunate to work with an incredible group of five coach leads from the regional zones (shout out to Lana, Tom, Kelly, Kim and Chon). Together we co-designed a coach developer support network that was both easy to implement and impactful. Tom was the brains behind the concept, Chon guided us to name the initiative the Coach Developer Tipu, (meaning ‘growth and development,’ which was pretty cool) and the rest of us helped mold and shape it.

How it worked was that each of the five coach leads committed to running one 60 minute online session per year. We scheduled these sessions every two months, creating a steady rhythm of development. This meant each coach lead only needed to plan and deliver one session, yet they, and their local networks, reaped the benefits of five. By doing so, they could focus on delivering quality content without the pressure of running multiple sessions.

These sessions allowed everyone in the coach developer system to come together online and became spaces for collaboration, idea-sharing, and building community. It was a bit like a good old-fashioned Kiwi barbecue, you know... each person has a turn at hosting, everyone brings a plate, and you leave with a full belly of knowledge and a few new friends.

It was one of those 'high impact, easy to implement' strategies that made a real difference without requiring a huge investment of time or resources. And three years later, this system is still going strong. In fact, I was invited back last year to present, which was an honour.

Here is an article which helped solve my dilemma of a coaching shortage in the season. And we are having discussions about ramping it up further in 2025. Read HERE

The Coaching App Update

We’re in full swing with the creation of fresh content for the IntaSport (soon to be The Coaching Gig) coaching app!

Rugby - We’re about to film new content specifically designed for secondary school rugby coaches.

Netball - We’re set to take the plunge and get the netball version of the app humming. It’s all in place to start filming.

Primary School PE - We’ve done a heap of PE specific content and the teachers we’ve shared it with have loved it. This is set to be launched in early 2025 too.

2025 Calendar

I’ve attached a calendar template that I find helpful for organising tasks and staying on track. For New Zealand readers, just note that that Term 2 in 2025 is only 9 weeks long, with King’s Birthday and Matariki public holidays mixed in. It’s likely to impact on the winter sport seasons, so there could be a good opportunity to think ‘outside the box’ and try some creative strategies to make the most of the time available - it's definitely helped me as I've just taken on the voluntary role of Chairperson of the Western BOP Junior Rugby Committee - wish me luck!
